Communities At Risk (CAR)
...a Network of Communities near Contaminated Sites
Communities At Risk (CAR) is a network of communities living near or on contaminated sites. Scattered throughout our nation, 70 million Americans, including 10 million children live within 4 miles of a toxic waste site. Overwhelmingly, it is the poor communities and communities of color most affected. These communities suffer through the loss of their property values, degeneration of their health and the constant threat to their safety. It is a daily struggle to live, work, and raise their families. These communities know the issues of contaminated sites better than anyone else for it is they that must live with them day after day - year after year - and these communities are perfectly capable of speaking for ourselves.
Communities At Risk strives to find ways for those voices to be heard in the public policy debates. By distributing information, facilitating discussions on issues of concern and coordinating joint actions, the network provides a mechanism to solve our problems.
The Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice acts as the coordinator and administrator for the network. For more information about Communities At Risk contact Penny Newman (951) 360-8451 or Florence Robinson (504) 775-0341.
