STRINGFELLOW SELECTED AS TOP PRIORITY
A National Priority List (NPL) was developed for the federal Superfund disbursements to each state. The state would name its top priority site, and that site was automatically placed on the NPL. To be guaranteed funds for a complete cleanup, the Stringfellow site had to be listed as the number one site in California. Just before the announcement of the NPL, political moves threatened to make Orange County’s McColl site the priority. When Concerned Neighbors in Action discovered that Stringfellow would be bypassed, they informed Governor Jerry Brown Jr. that if he did not name Stringfellow as the priority site they would be forced to have a press conference next door to the bill signing. Governor Brown conceded to CNA pressure and placed Stringfellow as the top priority site.
