SUPERDRIVE FOR SUPERFUND
This picture was taken at the 1986 kick-off event for the “National Superdrive for Superfund” in Glen Avon.
The Superdrive was organized by National Campaign Against Toxic Hazards, a coalition of community groups from
across the nation. This coalition drove across the United States in four pick-up trucks collecting water and soil
samples, petitions, letters, and children’s pictures. Started in Glen Avon and continuing through southern
California, the drive stopped at sites in Fullerton (McColl) and Torrance (Montrose), before touring Superfund
sites throughout the nation. At each site a press conference was held, generating publicity and interest concerning
Superfund. The information gathered was delivered to Congress at the end of the tour in Washington DC, resulting in a
strong Superfund Bill.
